The use of gender neutral pronouns in ELT textbooks (from 1970s to 2010s)

Abstract

Since the beginning of time, human beings have been able to distinguish themselves from animals through language. People have spoken first as a means of communicating their basic needs and later to be able to express themselves more thoroughly. Through spoken and written language they have also been able to make their ways of life and culture known to younger generations. As time went by, language has become more specific.
