Epicene pronominal forms in written English : variation across genres Parini, Alejandro The fact that the English language lacks a gender-neutral pronoun has prompted the use of forms already existing in the language such as the pronominal alternatives he, he or she and they. The purpose of this study is to analyse the choice of the epicene pronoun in two different corpora: a) a corpus of textbooks on the social sciences covering the period 1995-2005 and b) a corpus of online editions of UK and US newspapers consulted in the first half of 2007. The analysis has been carried out taking into account the occurrence of the three pronominal variants with three different types of antecedents: definite, indefinite and quantifier. We argue that pronominal choice is sensitive to the linguistic context and to the type of genre.

Sociología de la literatura e Internet : algunas consideraciones exploratorias Maltz, Hernán Parto de una doble opacidad: de la sociología de la literatura como área de conocimiento compleja y de Internet como fenómeno infinito. Ante este comienzo, en la introducción postulo dos tipos de aproximación significativa sobre cada uno de los componentes en cuestión: en el caso de la sociología de la literatura, la pertinencia de pensar un vínculo con los estudios del discurso digital; en el caso de Internet, el realce de tres atributos clave (la no universalidad del acceso por parte de la población, el establecimiento de un capitalismo de plataformas y la reconfiguración de las dinámicas sociales a partir del nexo onlineoffline). En el desarrollo, establezco una serie de preocupaciones en torno a tres grandes conjuntos: el primero, vinculado con la producción, circulación y consumo de literatura en el ecosistema de plataformas y redes sociales; el segundo, relacionado con modalidades más extremas y rupturistas de lo literario en entornos y medios digitales; el tercero, asociado a las representaciones de Internet a través de ficciones (argentinas) en soporte impreso.

Context and participation in virtual world Habbo Hotel Parini, Alejandro; Vera, Verónica; Galende, Edgardo; Ganga, Luis; Abuchaem, Renata; Cifre, Solange This paper presents the results of a small case study that is part of a major research project on language, identity and social media. In this work we focus our attention on context and participation in Habbo Hotel, a virtual world for socialising aimed at teenagers. Through the analysis of a corpus of text-based interactions we explore some of the contextual features that condition the way participants enact social action through participation in prefabricated role-playing situations that simulate real-life scenarios.
